Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has been granted approval to operate its autonomous ride-hailing service (Robotaxi) in Clark County, Nevada.
Tesla and Waymo’s applications to start paid robotaxi services in the state were approved during yesterday’s public meeting by the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) [4-hour-long recording can be watched below].
Under this approval, Tesla is allowed to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis in Clark County, Nevada. Clark County also includes the City of Las Vegas. The emphasis on Las Vegas is due to its vibrant culture and its vast potential for ride-hailing services.
Although the approval explicitly mentions Clark County, Tesla is permitted to operate Robotaxi Service throughout Nevada.
Before this comparatively large-scale approval, Tesla had only 10 Robotaxis in Nevada. These limited-scale units were used for internal testing, analysis, and AI-driven machine learning to adapt to the state’s road and traffic conditions.
Representatives from Tesla were present at yesterday’s NTA meeting. These executives said that Tesla will start with a limited number of Robotaxis and scale up from there.
The automaker should reveal its Robotaxi and Cybercab roadmap for Nevada in the coming days or weeks.
In the first phase, Tesla will use the Model Y Robotaxis for the service. Down the road, as the Austin, Texas, launch proves to be successful, the automaker will deploy Cybercabs in Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada.

Tesla owner and influencer, Sawyer Merritt, watched the whole 4-hour meeting and posted the following thoughts on X:
Tesla has just officially received approval for its full Autonomous Vehicle Network Company permit in Nevada, clearing the way for Tesla to launch a paid public Robotaxi service in Las Vegas.
This officially allows Tesla to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis over the next 12 months. The permit approval covers all of Clark County (which includes Las Vegas), but this approval actually allows Tesla to operate across the entire state of Nevada, according to the commission, as long as Tesla notifies the commission of when they want to expand their geofence.
I just watched live the Nevada Transportation Authority’s entire 4-hour long August 20th General Session meeting, and a few minutes ago the Commission approved Tesla’s permit.
Tesla representatives were at the meeting today, and they said that they won’t deploy all 5,000 robotaxis at once in the beginning (obviously), but that this permit approval gives them the flexibility to deploy more vehicles over time. They’ll start with a small launch of a few vehicles and then grow from there.

Tesla completed Nevada’s self-certification process for Robotaxi last November, and applied for an Autonomous Vehicle Network Company permit on June 3, 2026. Now with all approvals, Tesla can begin commercial Robotaxi operations in the state once they complete a few simple administrative things (vehicle inspections, insurance, provide the rates to be charged for transportation, etc). That should happen within the next 30 days.
To be clear, today’s approval is separate from the interim operating order Tesla previously received, which limited its robotaxi fleet to just 10 vehicles. Today’s approval replaces that previous interim operating order, and authorizes a fleet of up to 5,000 fully autonomous vehicles.

Tesla and Nevada
Tesla and Nevada have a long-term economic relationship. In 2014, Tesla opened its 2nd Gigafactory in Nevada. This plant was initially used for battery production.
Historically, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Governors of Nevada have had a great working relationship as well.
