As we reported last week, Tesla (TSLA) was mapping areas of Austin, Texas. This mapping activity was aimed at expanding the Robotaxi service and fine-tuning Full Self-Driving (FSD) on the Cybertruck.
Currently, Tesla is operating its Robotaxi service in a geofenced area in Austin, Texas. The automaker released a new map for the geofenced area earlier this week. Because of its weird shape, this map instantly became the point of discussion on social media, especially on Elon Musk-owned X.
Robotaxi users who have the Early Access privilege saw a new map of the geofenced Robotaxi service area on their Tesla Robotaxi mobile app. This new map instantly caught the attention of Tesla fans, enthusiasts, and the anti-Tesla crowd. To the curious minds, this map looked like a human phallus.
Interestingly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also posted the map’s image on his X (Twitter) timeline. This created a massive amount of discussion filled with critique, fun, and mild innuendo.
Elon Musk referred to the new Robotaxi map as a sign of market penetration. This week, Tesla competitors Lucid and Uber partnered with Nuro (a self-driving AI provider) to grab the robotaxi service market share from Tesla.
Waymo has also expanded their geofenced area in Austin, Texas as of late. So, car manufacturers, AI vision providers, and ride-hailing services are teaming up against Tesla to beat Tesla in this self-driving taxi service arena.
While the world tried to resemble the new Tesla Robotaxi service area map to whatnot, two Tesla official accounts gave some vague clarifications. These were also met with criticism as the company did not appear serious in the self-driving robotaxi business.
The Tesla AI account on X stated that this map matches an eggplant, saying, “We’re big egg plant fans!”. The main Tesla account said that it’s just our Tesla ‘T’ logo upside down.
