Tesla opens the Cybertruck configurator in the US, place your Foundation Series order without a reservation

Tesla (TSLA) has opened the online vehicle configurator for Foundation Series Cybertruck orders in the United States.

Before this, the official Cybertruck ordering page only took reservations and the customer was placed in a queue to be later on invited to place an order.

The automaker started deliveries of the unconventionally designed electric pickup truck in November last year. The first in line to get their Cybertrucks delivered were customers willing pay extra $20K for Foundation Series badging, FSD (Supervised) package, and premium perks and accessories installed from the factory (list of features below).

Since the Cybertruck online vehicle configurator is now open for public, Tesla customers willing to buy the Foundation Series trucks can directly place an order without waiting for their turn and getting invited by Tesla.

Tesla offered the Foundation Series Cybertrucks to its early adopters who were willing to pay a hefty premium on the base price. This offer is valid for the first year of deliveries. Since the 1st year of Cybertruck deliveries is about to complete in November, Tesla is attempting to sell as many Foundation Series versions as possible, hence the reason for opening the configurator to the public.

Tesla only included the Cybertruck Dual-Motor AWD and the Cyberbeast (Tri-Motor AWD) variants to the Foundation Series offering. The base Single-Motor RWD version of the Cybertruck is due to go into production in 2025 (check out the prices of all variants).

As the Foundation Series Cybertruck production is going to phase-out in Q3 2024, the Tesla electric pickup trucks are going to suddenly become $20K more affordable. Earlier in June, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised that the cheaper non-Foundation Cybertruck production will start in Q3.

Interestingly, as the prices will drop, the Dual-Motor AWD Cybertruck variant will be priced at $79,990. This is just under the Federal Tax Credit threshold just like the base Model X electric SUV. So, the Cybertruck AWD variant might just become eligible for the Federal Tax Credit. Until the base RWD variant comes out, the benefit might phase out entirely or partially.

There is a long queue of Tesla customers waiting for the Foundation Series production to end so that they can place the order for their cheaper Cybertrucks. This will mark the beginning of the Cybertruck production ramp up because Tesla has a backlog of around 2 million pre-orders for the unorthodox electric pickup truck. Scaling up Cybertruck production will be another challenge for Tesla as Elon Musk hinted last year.
