It was just a regular day on X (formerly Twitter) and its owner Elon Musk posting on the social media platform — before the discussion thread turned into an egoistic battleground of words.
Tesla & SpaceX CEO Elon Musk who also owns X simply posted a job offer at xAI (the X’s artificial intelligence arm). All of a sudden, competing social media platform Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun commented on Musk’s post.
Yann’s unsolicited reply to Elon Musk’s post was mildly derogatory and an attack on him as a boss at his companies. While Musk could’ve ignored his response, he chose to reply to him with the same intensity (Newton’s third law).
As Yann criticized Elon Musk for his role as a boss, Musk asked Yann to show his credentials and how his work has impacted today’s world. To which, Yann LeCun told him that he was a scientist and more than 80 of his research papers have been published since 2022.
Since Yann works for Meta (Facebook) in an influential role, his uncalled-for attack on Elon Musk hit exactly where he wanted it to — to infuriate Musk.
Elon Musk completely rejected that those papers published in scientific publications truly have any worth in the real world. To which, Yann continued his comments and went further with his explanations on how science and engineering go hand-in-hand for the progress of humanity.
The situation escalated and both Elon Musk and Yann LeCun kept posting replies and taunts even after 24 hours of the original X post and its response.
Yann further said that although he likes his other companies that make electric cars, sustainable energy, satellite internet (Starlink), and more but he does not like Elon Musk creating hype about his products. Yann even blamed Elon Musk for creating conspiracy theories.
Yann getting offended by Elon Musk’s xAI job posting might be due to the insecurity at Meta AI of losing engineers to Musk’s company.
Just yesterday, Elon Musk’s xAI completed its 2nd round of funding and reportedly secured $6 billion. The demand for AI engineers at top Silicon Valley companies is ever higher because of the strong need to stay ahead of the competition.
Some Elon Musk fans even think that Yann LeCun is attempting to get a job at xAI. This is the reason he’s posting his credentials directly under Musk’s X posts.
Musk’s fans also criticized Yann for throwing jabs at Elon Musk on social media. One X user said:
Yann, with all the respect I have for your work, and as one of the few who convinced me to learn about machine learning more than 15 years ago, why don’t you start your own AI company and try to do good? Staying at Meta and telling others they are wrong is a bit odd, no?
To which Yann replied, “I’m a scientist, not a business or product person”. After reading this comment, Elon Musk said, “Yann is just following orders”. Elon Musk hinted that Yann is posting all these comments on the orders of his Meta (Facebook) boss Mark Zuckerberg.
Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg’s feud is a long story. But in short, it started when Elon Musk deleted official pages of himself, Tesla, and SpaceX from Facebook in 2018.
A physical cage fight between Musk and Zuck was ablaze across social media last year but it never materialized beyond words and memes of all sorts.
Yann LeCun did not just write anti-Elon posts on X, I found that he was also posting this stuff on Meta’s X alternative Threads as well.
In one of his threads, he claimed that Elon Musk knows him very well and has also met him a few times. This was surprising but interesting too.
Elon Musk’s fans think Yann LeCun spammed Elon Musk’s post and should apologize to him. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
